All India Radio return with their eighth studio album The Silent Surf. Shunning excessive electronic trickery, and with the mantra “sometimes less is more” planted firmly in mind, writer-producer Martin Kennedy embraced a lofi aesthetic and sparse instrumentation, only using a bare minimum studio ‘fairy dust.’ The resulting album is like a soundtrack to a beautiful and strange film. Present are the familiar scratchy atmospheres, dreamy beats and tremolo guitars, evoking images of cosmonauts, lost 1970s surf movies and lone gunmen straight out of an Ennio Morricone dream. The album features a cameo by The Church’s Steve Kilbey (Under The Milky Way) on The Bomb. Martin Kennedy and Steve Kilbey released an album together in 2009 and are about to release a second one in 2011 (on which All India Radio is the backing band). The album also features the voice of Professor Don Gurnett, famous for his ‘space sounds’ recorded for NASA (used to amazing effect by the Kronos Quartet on their Sun Ring recordings) over the last forty years.
