Beni My Love Sees You
How do you capture the essence of a man like this? One so light he nary leaves a footprint? One with fingers so fast, like a hummingbird’s wings, you’re lucky to see them at all as they dash across the 1’s and 2’s? One whose scent engulfs a room in a cloud of smooth with just one pirouette? One with tunes so deft they swim through your head and straight to your heart? That’s the problem one is faced with when attempting to encapsulate the transcendental nature of Beni, an enigmatic one man path to enlightenment through that age old ritual known as dance. This path is now being most luminously lit by his new release My Love Sees You.
Beni’s upbringing in the world of techno was harsh and goes some way to explaining the physical and metaphysical place he finds himself in today. From a formative age he was led astray by a group of gypsy ravers otherwise known as The Bang Gang Deejays, and his education at the school of beats, rhymes and life saw long days and looooooonger nights, spent in clubs from Paris to Penrith.
Following on from The Bang Gang’s worldwide uprising, Beni went on to to release a couple of bonafied #1’s in Cameroon and Moldova under the Riot In Belgium guise. The Acid Never Lies and La Musique also became staples in any self-respecting DJ’s treasured box, including the musical catacombs of 2 Many DJs, Tiga, Felix Da Housecat, Boys Noize and Tiesto.
Now though, the sun has set on Riot In Belgium, and Beni is going solo with Paris-based label Kitsuné, with his virgin solo voyage, My Love Sees You, to be released in the European autumn. Under the Beni guise he has already remixed the likes of Tiga, Digitalism, Fischerspooner, La Roux and Sneaky Sound System, and now the onslaught of the incredible original dancefloor king-hits begins!
How do you feel about a tune that encompasses the sound of every seminal year of dance music’s history? From the ‘72 disco drums and sampled diva wails, to the ‘79 punk funk bassline, to the acid squelches of the 2nd summer of love, ‘96 French touch vocoder all the way through the years to the crunchy glitches of (gasp!) new rave, it’s a sound of all of these making slow love in a bath of warm futurism. Is this the sound of today? Ah, no. Is this the sound of tomorrow? God blimey no, mad dandy! This is the sound of the day after that, and the day after that. It’s Day After That dance!
“‘My Love Sees You’ is one of my favorite songs of 2008, no lie. You know when you have a secret weapon, a song that your friends don't really have yet and you're all like ‘you gotta hear this shit’? This is that song for me right now. It sounds timeless, I love the groove of the drums. It's like 2 parts disco, 1 part ‘Da Funk’, 1 part banger and zero parts blog!” A-Trak
Remixes come from French house superstar Etienne de Crécy and New York disco dons In Flagranti.
