Bombadil can refer to two groups: (1) A contemporary folk-pop band from North Carolina. (2) A glam rock parody band featuring members of Barclay James Harvest (1) *Bombadil are a three piece folk-pop band from Chapel Hill/Durham with guitar, bass, piano, and drums as their primary instruments. The band are known for their creative and somewhat elusive lyrics, quirky sound, and upbeat, energetic live show. Bombadil began in early 2005 after guitarist Bryan Rahija and bassist and keyboardist Daniel Michalak decided to start a band while studying abroad in Bolivia. Afichalak and Rahija returned to Duke University in North Carolina and added a mutual friend, multi-instrumentalist Stuart Robinson (who specializes in various keyboards and trumpet), and Michalak's younger brother John Michalak on drums. After a live demo recorded at UNC Chapel Hill campus concert got the fledgling band (named for the J.R.R. Tolkien character Tom Bombadil) signed to the local indie Ramseur Records, a self-titled EP was released in 2006. A heavy touring schedule combined with academic requirements caused John Michalak to leave the band prior to the recording of its full-length debut; he was replaced by James Phillips. Bombadil's debut album, A Buzz, a Buzz, was released in the spring of 2008. Stuart Robinson left the band in 2009 to pursue academic interests. The band released their second album, Tarpits and Canyonlands, in July 2009. (2) Nick Mobbs, an A&R man at progressive rock label Harvest Records, formed Bombadil in 1974 to record the song "Breathless" and "When the City Sleeps" as a spoof of the glam rock that had just become trendy. Although the songs were supposedly written by "Terry Bull" and "Lester Forrest" they were in fact written by Woolly Wolstenholme and played by his band Barclay James Harvest. The songs failed to attract much interest however and before long BJH left Bombadil behind and became successful in their own right.
