Biography
Keep track of Sleep Thieves at http://sleepthieves.wordpress.com Sleep Thieves bridge the gap between quirky-indie and dancey-electro; according to Analogue Magazine they “create music that in one moment trips lightly along in a swirling hush of gentle vocals, dainty keys and stomping electronic beats, while the next moment swells with driving electronic drums and growling, dirty synths.” Since their live debut in November 2008, Sleep Thieves have played some notable shows including the 2009 IMRO Showcase, Club AC30 in Whelan’s, with Saint Etienne in Cork Opera House, Dark Room Notes at their album launch, with international artist Midori Hirano and at the Fight Like Apes curated Ruby Sessions show and at the Dublin Electronic Arts Festival (DEAF) and the Dublin Fringe Festival. Many of Ireland’s most prominent publications have commented on the band’s potential, prominent Irish Times journalist Jim Carroll also profiled Sleep Thieves as his 'act to watch’ in the Oxegen edition of The Ticket in June 2009. The band released 'It Was Only A Satellite' in June 09, a four song EP that showcases both the gentler and the dancier end of their sonic spectrum. Tracks from the EP have been played on stations such as 2FM/2XM & Phantom FM as well as many local stations here at home, and BBC Introducing on BBC 6Music, Resonance FM & Diesel Radio in the UK. In June 09 the track 'Osumi' was selected for the Music Alliance Pact playlist of June 2009 appearing on 25 prominent worldwide blogs worldwide and was featured on the IMRO 'Best of New Sounds' CD. The band released the well received 'City Lights' as a download single in September, which is now accompanied by their first video directed by IMTV award winning director Killian Broderick. The track has been recently selected in the Nialler9 ‘Best Irish songs of 2009’ poll, and being listed in 'best of' rundowns on several other blogs. Most recently, Sleep Thieves have appeared on several prominent 'Faces of 2010' lists, such as State.ie's yearly rundown and compilation of 2010's tips. They also appear on museyon.com's 'The Scene In Six Sounds' American centered preview for this year (alongside bands such as Local Natives, Marina & The Diamonds), had a full page interview in December's AU Magazine and popular art/music blog Torture Garden voted City Lights in its songs of 2009 edition, stating that 'City Lights' will stay in your head for hours, and leave you looking for more' and listed Sleep Thieves in their list for 2010 also. The band have been heavily featured on Dan Hegarty's 2FM show, with Osumi in rotation for the last 6 months and were broadcast in session on Monday 25th January, and look to build on the attention they have received by releasing more material in 2010, a single/video later in the year, with an album in the works also. Live, they played the Haiti Fundraiser in Whelans/Village in February, have their own headliner in Whelans main venue on Wed March 24th, and are supporting shoegaze royalty Cranes at Club AC30 in April. PRESS CUTTINGS State.ie 12th October 2010 Live review of Hard Working Class Heroes (Niamh Doolan) “Sleep Thieves offered a much needed wake up call to the evening’s proceedings, like a shot of concentrated caffeine straight to the brain. The precision splattering of synths, guitar from Wayne and Derek and sweet as honey vocals from Sorcha were given an unexpected but most welcomed heavier treatment, providing an edgier sound while retaining the band’s established electro-rock sensibility throughout their six song set. ‘Hope is Dead’, ‘Impersonator’ and ‘You, Me and Everyone’ commanded the venue’s attention. Proof, if needed, of a band that just keeps getting better with every subtle evolution . Expect minds to be blown by a forthcoming album.” State.ie, March 10 – Live review (Jenn Gannon) “Harder, fitter, faster, stronger, (Sleep Thieves) are not afraid to stare their audience in the face and demand that they dance and with music this melodic it would be rude not to reply with your feet. “ “… irresistible, hip-shaking, (their sound) is the sweetest of kisses followed by the bloodiest of punches “ The Ticket, Irish Times March 10 (Sleep Thieves as Gig of the Week) “ … sparkling, swaggering electro-pop… Definitely worth staying up late for” AU Magazine, December 09 “..purveyors of bleeping marvellous electro pop with sugar spun sentiments… The EP fizzes like a sherbert flying saucer” The Scene, Daily Star Sep 09 “Fans of Fight Like Apes and Grand Pocket Orchestra may have found the last in their holy trinity” Heinekenmusic.ie (Alison Curtis editorial May 2010) “I love Sorcha’s voice and feel their offerings are as strong or stronger than the Crystal Castles, Ladytrons or Metrics of the world… enjoy!” The Scene, Daily Star Sep 09 "Fans of Fight Like Apes and Grand Pocket Orchestra may have found the last in their holy trinity" Panicdots.com – december 09 “If… YACHT, Air and Not Squares all jumped into a blender and got blended, this is the juice that it would create. You just gotta check these guys out.“ State.ie - March 09 "Their synth-heavy electro rock is stunningly delicate and naïve at times, showcasing the bands impressive ability to swap roles and instrumentation... in songs like Winter there’s potential practically oozing from the three of them." Museyon Guides: The Scene in Six Sounds “Sleep Thieves are proving a crowd pleaser and could find themselves with a more international outlook by the end of 2010.” Analogue Magazine - January 09 "Sleep Thieves play sweet sweet electro pop incorporating lot’s of synths, drum machines and catchy guitar riffs... (and) are definitely one of the more promising new Irish acts in 2009." RATED - Music Column, News of the World June 09 "(Sleep Thieves) create an impressively polished sound... they've built up a loyal fan base and are a very promising electronic act, representing a breath of fresh air on the live music scene in Dublin." Drop-D.ie EP review July 09 "Debut EP It Was Only A Satellite is a heady mix of synths, guitar riffs and lush vocal melodies...(Osumi) is a slice of electronic perfection...they have proven they have enough musical muscle and ingenuity to back up the fawning praise they have received to date" User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License and may also be available under the GNU FDL.
