There are at least 2 artists called Perfume.
[1]
Perfume is a three person J-Pop/Technopop group from Hiroshima who debuted locally in 2001 and nationally in 2005. In 2001, three 11-12 year old girls from an Artist School formed a group together in their hometown of Hiroshima. In 2002, they released two limited edition singles only in Hiroshima, called “
OMAJINAI★ペロリ” and “
彼氏募集中”. All three members moved to Tokyo in 2003 and became produced by
中田ヤスタカ. Between the years of 2003 and 2004, they produced “
スウィートドーナッツ”, “
モノクロームエフェクト”, and “
ビタミンドロップ” under the indie label Bee-Hive Records. During that time, they performed to a one-man live three times. Because the girls were so energetic, fans acquired an appreciation for them.
On September 21, 2005, Nakata used their techno sound to become a cute technopop-style group in the near future for their major debut. It wasn’t until 2007 that Perfume gained attention, when their single “
ポリリズム” became the theme song for a nationwide recycling campaign. The day of its release, it hit number #4 on the Oricon charts and #7 for the weekly ranking, making this the first time Perfume reached the top 10. Almost overnight the group became a success, and to date they have sold nearly 60,000 copies of “ポリリズム”.
After that, they were invited to several shows and radio programs. On December 31st, 2007, Perfume performed in a concert titled “Countdown 2008”. This was by far the biggest performance in the history of the group. In February 2008, Perfume released their new single “Baby Cruising Love / Macaroni”, breaking their previous record by achieving #3 on the daily and weekly charts. Since their newfound success, their album “Perfume ~Complete Best~” began to rechart despite being released two years prior.
Their 2nd album ‘-Game-’ charted number one on the Oricon chart.
Perfume’s single “love the wold”, the first from their third album ⊿, was released on July 9, 2008, and was the first techno song to reach #1 on the Oricon chart. It broke the #2 record that Yellow Magic Orchestra held since 1983.
'Dream Fighter' was released on November 19, 2008 and placed 2nd on the Oricon charts, where it charted for 10 weeks and sold 105,000 copies.
The final single from ⊿, 'One Room Disco' was released on March 25, 2009. The single reached no.1 on the Oricon weekly chart dated April 1, and placed 59th on the yearly chart, selling 101,000 copies.
"Fushizen na Girl/Natural ni Koishite" (不自然なガール / ナチュラルに恋して) is their tenth major single, and the first to be released from their currently un-named fourth studio album. Both songs were produced by Yasutaka Nakata, continuing Perfume's exclusive relationship with him as their producer. The double a-side single will be released on April 14, 2010.
Their third album ⊿(pronounced Triangle) was released on July 8 2009, and has been so far sold certified platinum for sales of 250,000 copies. This sucess can be attributed to a successful string of 3 singles: 'Love the World', 'Dream Fighter' and 'One Room Disco'; as well as a sucessful national tour.
[2] The English band Perfume were a successful independent band in the 90s. Releasing many Indie No.1’s on their own label, Aromasound. Hits include Lover, Yesterday Follows You, and Haven’t Seen You.
Perfume's top ten hit 'Lover' is available on the new Britpop compilation 'Common People'. The NME review by Luke Lewis hails Lover as a stand out 'lost track':
"There is one track on the album, though, that stopped me dead in my tracks. It's by Perfume, and it's called 'Lover'. Perfume were a short-lived band from Leicester whose career highlight was supporting Gene. 'Lover' came out as a single in 1995 and reached number 158. I can't link to the song because, in modern terms, is doesn't exist. It pre-dated YouTube. It's not on LastFm. You can't buy it from iTunes or stream it on Spotify.

But it's magnificent - an ecstatic, vernal bloom of falsetto and violins that gave me one of those powerful surges of nostalgia that critics always insist on calling a "Proustian rush", when what they really mean is, you know, "it reminded them of something"."
